Psalm 9 “Five Star Psalm”

“Truth for Truckers” *February 9, 2014*  Psalm 9  “Five Star Psalm”

This “Five Star Psalm” is given that label because there are five different promises that David makes to his Lord which will be the focus of this brief message. A good sub-title would be Praise for Victory because it is amazing what praising the Lord will do for the soul that is mired in the “mugwumps” which is a word that literally means down in the dumps for whatever reason. That is not the place for the child of God!

“I will praise Thee, O LORD, with my whole heart” is the first promise David makes and he promises his praise will be accomplished with his whole heart. Known as the man after God’s own heart possibly because he went at everything in life with all he had available as is stated here in the first verse. No half-heartedness here!

Secondly, he backs up his first statement with his next “I will” using Hebrew parallelism which is a favorite of those who wrote Scripture. This tactic underscores the meaning and importance of what he said in the first I will.“I will show forth all Thy marvelous works” These two “I will” statements are complimenting elements of praise to the LORD for actions which He has already accomplished.

Then in (v.2) David continues his praise with two more praise promises: “I will be glad and rejoice in Thee: I will sing praise to Thy name, O Thou Most High.” His understanding of being in God rings with New Testament truth of the born-again child of God being in Christ. David’s gladness and rejoicing are found in God, not in temporal things, his life was in God just as we are in Christ.

Next is his promise to sing praise to the name of Jehovah. Singing to the LORD is commanded over fifty times in the book of Psalms and is one of the most lacking in obedience by the Christian. Many Bible scholars believe singing to be the highest form of praise to the Lord. And, the “New Song” which could be the Holy-Spirit authored singing of Scripture is taught in Ephesians 5:18, 19.

The fifth “I will” promise is found in (v.14) “That I may show forth all Thy praise in the gates of the daughter of Zion: I will rejoice in Thy salvation.” This is quite the proclamation! David’s claim to show forth ALL of God’s praise is based upon His so great salvation. The word salvation in this context means ‘deliverance’ for all throughout this lengthy Psalm David is dealing with his enemies which is par for the course as David was a “Man of War”.

He was constantly engaged in physical warfare with the enemies of Israel. But, in the midst of battle he continues to praise His God for His marvelous and miraculous deliverance! A powerful “Five Star Psalm”.
The application for us Drivers, is keep on praising the Lord regardless of circumstance, victory is His!
